Savasana may look easy at first glance but it can mentally be one of the most challenging poses. It requires you to be physically and mentally still, fully relaxed and fully aware. Here are some tips for the next time you try this Asana!
Get comfortable!
- Take pressure off your spine by lifting your pelvis slightly off the floor and, with your hands. Push the back of the pelvis toward the tailbone, then return the pelvis to the floor.
- Do the same on your neck to release tension on your neck
- Use props! A bolster under your knees or a pillow under your head. A blanket if youre cold (:
Release any tension
- Breathe!!! Scan the body with your mind for any tension spots and breath into them to release and relax.
- Remember to soften the sense organs aswell. Soften the root of the tongue, the wings of the nose, the channels of the inner ears, and the skin of the forehead, especially around the bridge of the nose between the eyebrows. Let the eyes sink to the back of the head, release your brain to the back of the head.
Just notice and observe
- Stay in this pose for 5 minutes for every 30 minutes of practice.
- Slowly exit the pose vertebrae by vertebrae at a time with the head coming of the mat last.
Set an intention
- Before you come out of savasana, take a mental snapshot of how you feel on every level. Ask yourself what you’d like to take with you from your practice, and what you might like to leave behind. Seal these observations into your psyche with an inner smile, and then enjoy a deep inhale to awaken and emerge into your day. Now take a moment to notice that you feel more rested, awake, and alive than you did before.
