“Meditate, be mindful, spiritual, and at peace.” It’s a funny thing to consider ‘fashionable’ but there seems to be a new wave of people interested in what was once considered flakey hippy stuff. So why are so many people resorting to this new age approach?
Perhaps it’s just the stresses of life building up to an unmanageable level, with long work hours, pressures to be constantly perfect, achieve great wealth, and juggle a million things a day without giving your mind a rest.
Too often I hear people compete with each other over who is the most tired, who has the hardest life challenges, who’s children are more difficult etc. On top of this, we feel the need to be busy ALL the time, or else we fear being branded lazy or a failure. These negative habits cause more and more stress in our lives, but we continue to affirm it with the same behaviour, finding only temporary relief in TV or social media.
So it’s no surprise people are turning to alternative options to help find peace of mind and a sense of happiness that they can’t find with the constant chatter of modern day distractions.
Giving yourself just one hour a week to stop, breath, just be, and focus on your breath can completely change your life. It’s not a luxury to be peaceful and calm each day, it’s a necessity for happiness and health.
With regular practice of mediation you will feel the benefits; a more balanced state of mind, with a sense of clarity, calm and positivity. Many people feel they get to know themselves better after regular meditation, as they spend time with their thoughts. Some feel a connection to their own mind that they never knew was there. You can start to live a more conscious life with intention to each day. Meditation has the power to teach us how to be happy, and perhaps even to discover the purpose of life.
If you think that you don’t have time then consider ancient zen philosophers who say “You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day, unless you’re too busy; then you should sit for an hour.”
